❤️ Family, Trauma, and Survival: Why you Disassociate and How to Stop

Your Connection Guide

This Week in the Connection Codes

When I was 19, I walked into my biological father's house for the first time. 😅

When I pulled into the gated driveway in my beat-up Buick Century, my jaw dropped 😲. He walked me through each room and showed me the marble imported from Italy, how the staircase was custom designed, and each unique element along the way.

I had never been in a house like that and each comment felt like a knife.

If I was being my authentic self, I would have started screaming at the top of my lungs- I DON'T CARE ABOUT YOUR MARBLE. (along with some expletives) 🤬

But... on that night... I needed to fake it. I needed to mask. 🥸

Not for him- but for me... for my emotional safety. He wasn't safe for me. 🙅🏼‍♀️

So I smiled. I said--- Wow, that is nice.

Then, at the end of the night, I got in my car and cried.

Let’s face it, we’ve all been there at some point. The situation we’re in (or about to be in) is so painful we can feel ourselves beginning to “lose it.” We feel like at any second, we’ll succumb to a panic attack, or we’ll snap, or we’ll disassociate and tune out from reality completely 🫥.

🛑 If you can relate to any of this, I need you to do something for me.

Take the time to listen to this week’s podcast episode. It is all about stunt doubling, disassociating, and the differences between the two. Some of you are likely thinking,

“But, Tera, Connection Codes is all about being authentic!

Becoming your ‘stunt double’ sounds like the complete opposite.”

I get it, but trust me 🙏— listen to the episode. Dr Glenn, Phyllis, and I explain how this all fits into Connection Codes, and how stunt doubling can, in fact, be a healthy way to approach some situations. Dr Glenn shares his story of stunt doubling with his family and the effect it had on his relationship.

This episode is focused on family situations, but this can also apply to the workplace. Creating safety for yourself in the moment while being able to process your experience with a safe person is key to your mental health.

You need this. You deserve this.

Let's do this.

Tera

Ps. What would I do differently today from my 19-year-old self now that I have these tools? I would still mask. But, I would get in the car and call my safe person.

I would share the hurt, shame, lonely. I would put the words to my experience to process it.

And my brain and heart would thank me because it would have connected me to me.

I would have been able to be a healthier version of myself and not stuff pain that I needed to process 15 years later 😂🙃.

THAT is the power of these tools.

Your Connection Guide This Week in the Connection Codes Reader, Lately, I’ve been experiencing moments of intense fear—and I have a feeling I’m not alone. There’s so much happening in our country, in the world… it’s overwhelming. I try to balance how much news I consume, because I want to stay informed—but I also don’t want to drown in the sadness I feel for humans across the globe. We weren’t built for this level of exposure. We’re consuming news at a rate that our brains—and our bodies—were...

Your Connection Guide This Week in the Connection Codes Reader, There was a season in my life where I was in a really dark place. The kind of dark where I couldn’t get out of bed. Where I would lock my bedroom door, crying on the other side, while my kids knocked and called for me. But no one knew how bad it really was. I was okay showing that life was hard—but only in the way that made it palatable for other people. I laughed about it. I made jokes. I posted about the chaos of motherhood in...
