When Hurt Hides Behind Anger: Why Connection Starts with Vulnerability ❤️‍🩹

Your Connection Guide

This Week in the Connection Codes

Have you ever judged someone for being angry, without realizing what’s really going on beneath the surface? I know I have.

I can think of times when I saw someone’s anger and thought, Why can’t they just calm down? But here’s the thing: anger often masks a deeper emotion—hurt.

When we only try to stop the anger, we miss the chance to get to the core of what’s really happening. We miss the chance to create lasting change. But when we can see the hurt? That’s when we can truly connect. 💡

That’s what this week’s episode is all about.

Dr. Glenn, Phyllis, and I dive into the deep emotional impact of hurt and how it shapes our decisions—often in ways that lead us to throw out meaningful connections. We explore the origins of the phrase “throwing the baby out with the bathwater” (yes, really!) and share stories where unresolved pain led to disconnection—from friendships to church experiences and even political divides.

This conversation is all about staying curious, processing emotions like hurt and fear, and choosing connection over isolation.

It’s powerful because let’s face it: sharing our hurt takes vulnerability. So many of us keep it bottled up inside, afraid to let it out.

Even this morning, I hurt Wes. I could tell something was off, but it wasn’t easy for him to tell me he was hurt. He danced around it for a bit, but the moment he opened up? Everything shifted. Once he shared his hurt, I could meet him there. We could connect.

That’s the magic of seeing past the anger to the hurt. It’s about creating space for honesty and vulnerability so we can hold onto what truly matters.

Your Connection Guide This Week in the Connection Codes Reader, Lately, I’ve been experiencing moments of intense fear—and I have a feeling I’m not alone. There’s so much happening in our country, in the world… it’s overwhelming. We weren’t built for this level of exposure. We’re consuming news at a rate that our brains—and our bodies—were...

Your Connection Guide This Week in the Connection Codes Reader, There was a season in my life where I was in a really dark place. The kind of dark where I couldn’t get out of bed. Where I would lock my bedroom door, crying on the other side, while my kids knocked and called for me. But no one knew how bad it really was. I was okay showing that life was hard—but only in the way that made it palatable for other people. I laughed about it. I made jokes. I posted about the chaos of motherhood in...
